More similar than they think: Liberals and conservatives exaggerate perceived moral views

More similar than they think: Liberals and conservatives exaggerate perceived moral views

Thursday, December 13, 2012

Moral stereotypes about "typical" liberals and conservatives held by both groups are generally correct, but exaggerated both for their own group and the other, according to new research published December 12 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Jesse Graham at the University of Southern California and his colleagues at the University of Virginia and New York University.

The researchers asked 2,212 U.S participants to answer questions about moral beliefs either with their own views, or with their idea of a typical liberal or conservative person's answers. They found that liberals endorsed individualistic moral concerns of compassion and fairness more than conservatives, and conservatives endorsed group-focused concerns such as loyalty and respect for authority. Across the political spectrum, participants' responses correctly reflected the moral endorsements of "typical" liberals and conservatives, but increased the extremity of the views. The authors found that these perceived stereotypes exaggerated the moral ideologies of both the respondent's own group as well as that of the other group, and that liberals were least accurate about the views held by both groups.

Graham explains, "Rather than finding that liberals think conservatives are immoral, and conservatives think the same about liberals, we found that all three groups shared exaggerated moral stereotypes about partisans on either side. These moral stereotypes were basically that liberals don't care at all about loyalty, authority, and sanctity, and that conservatives don't care at all about compassion, fairness, and equality. The findings suggest that liberals and conservatives, while differing systematically in their moral worldviews, are actually more similar in their moral judgments than anyone thinks."

Things to drink coffee out of. | Door Sixteen

I have a problem with buying mugs. I love coffee (and tea, and spiced almond milk), and there?s just something about drinking it from a perfectly-weighted, beautifully-designed mug that makes the whole experience so much nicer. I?m not content to stop with a set of 8 matching mugs, though?no, I need to keep buying more and more mugs (usually in pairs, with the odd single here and there) and consequently finding more and more places to stash them. There are certain ones I prefer for weekday mornings, others that feel right on a Sunday, and the ones I gravitate toward when I?m being stupid and drinking coffee at 10:00 at night.

coffee mugs

1. Bono mugs by Catharina Kippel, Design House Stockholm

Of all of the mugs featured here, these are the only ones I own. Actually, I only own the two in the top row?I have four of each! For a short period of time several years ago, C&B was selling these mugs individually for a great price, so I stocked up out of fear that they?d break easily and then I?d be sad. Happily, they?re all still in great shape! When I have guests, these are the mugs I serve coffee in. They?re also the ones Evan and I use most frequently on weekends. I love love love them.

2. Black Dot mugs, Schoolhouse Electric

I?m obsessed with these mugs. Every time I see a picture of one on Jen?s Instagram, I am filled with lust and greed. Don?t they just look like they?d be so nice to hold?! The little ones are particularly well-proportioned. I love how creamy the white is?I bet they?d look really good in my kitchen.

3. Yellow Fire-King mug, Vint

I?m a sucker for bright yellow, and I love Fire-King glassware. I saw this mug at Vint last night and had to force myself to not buy it. It?s like drinking out of a lemon! Perfect for tea.
? Vint is kindly offering a 16% discount for anything in the shop until 12/20. Use the code DOOR16 at checkout!

4. Black Harlequin and Gold Harlequin Thermo mugs, Ferm Living

I pretty much want everything at Ferm Living, these mugs included. I was concerned about the lack of handles at first (I have a few handle-less mugs, and I always wind up having to hold them with napkins), but then I realized they?re actually ?thermo? mugs. They have a dual-wall design, so your coffee stays nice and hot inside, but the part that touches your hand is cool. Neat!

coffee mugs

5. Arne Jacobsen letter cups, Finnish Design Shop

Yeah, I know I just said I?m averse to handle-less mugs, but LOOK AT THESE. Worth the burns. (Or, you know, you could keep pencils in them. Or let your coffee cool down and stop being so impatient.) I first spotted these letter cups at Design Milk months and months ago, and I can?t stop thinking about them. The typography dates back to Arne Jacobsen?s signage design for Aarhus City Hall from 1937, and it still looks fresh and modern today. I?d love to have a digitized version of this typeface for my own use!

6. Tu Es La Vague cup, House of Rym

The entire House of Rym product line is beautiful. The ceramics are designed by Swedes Anna Backlund and Elisabeth Dunker (my favorite!). It?s probably not enough to just buy one cup, though, since they look so great when combined with a mismatched saucer as part of a mismatched set. So many pretty photos of all of the options on Elisabeth?s blog!

7. Stig Lindberg Bersa cup & saucer, Huset

Eternal wish-list item. Sigh. What is it with Swedes and ceramics? What is it with Swedes and everything? I?ve been dreaming about owning a set of Stig Lindberg cups and saucers for years, but they look so delicate. I?d probably drop them all in the first week and be sad forever. So pretty from afar, though.

8. Silkkikuikka Mug, Marimekko

Any mug with FIVE Ks in its name is good enough for me! I can tell you from experience that the handles on Marimekko mugs are perfectly positioned for maximum comfort. They?re a pleasure to hold, and small enough that your coffee doesn?t cool down too much before you get to the bottom.

OK, now I want coffee?

FTC scolds Apple, Google, developers over kids' privacy

20 hrs.

Parents still aren't given the guidance they need to determine whether or not kids' apps are safe,?the?Federal Trade Commission said Monday.?

Comparing a new survey of kids' apps with its 2011 study, the FTC observed "little progress toward giving parents the information they need to determine what data is being collected from their children, how it is being shared, or who will have access to it." To make matters worse, in-app connections to?social media and mobile ad networks make tracking even more difficult, and even hard to identify by the developer itself.

"While we think most companies have the best intentions when it comes protecting kids' privacy, we haven't seen any progress,"?said FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, in a statement.?"In fact,?our study shows that kids' apps siphon an alarming amount of information from mobile devices without disclosing this fact to parents."

Also read:?iParenting: How I keep my kids safe around tablets

Under the FTC's?Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), websites and online services must disclose that they collect and share information about children 12 or younger, and must get parental permission before gathering that information from kids. As Reuters reported in October,?the FTC is trying to update these ?rules to "further restrict companies and websites that target youths or are geared to young audiences."

To find out how the latest batch of kids' apps were doing, privacy-wise,?FTC staff examined hundreds?sold in both the Apple App Store and the Google Play store, the distribution point for most Android apps. Investigators sought out privacy?disclosure information in three locations: On the app store description page, inside the app itself and on the promotional Web page published by the?developer or publisher.

Beyond the fact that only 20 percent of reviewed apps disclosed "any information about the app's privacy practices,"?the FTC indicates there were some particular red flags.

"The results showed that many of the apps shared certain information with third parties???such as device ID, geolocation, or phone number ? without disclosing that fact to parents. Further, a number of apps contained interactive features ? such as advertising, the ability to make in-app purchases, and links to social media ? without disclosing these features to parents prior to download."

Nearly 60 percent of the studied apps were sending data back to the developer or an ad network, analytics firm or other third party.

When it comes to in-app purchases, 17 percent of the reviewed apps allowed kids to make?purchases at prices?ranging from 99 cents to $29.99. "Although both stores provided certain indicators when an app contained in-app purchasing capabilities, these indicators were not always prominent and, even if noticed, could be difficult for many parents to understand."

Although the study focused on individual apps, it's clear that the FTC holds Apple and Google responsible for the privacy protection of its app-buying?customers.?

"All of the companies in the mobile app space, especially the gatekeepers of the app stores, need to do a better job," said FTC Chairman?Leibowitz. "We'll do another survey in the future and we will expect to see improvement."

The?Association for Competitive Technology, an?advocacy group representing more than 5,000 app developers and IT firms, responded to the FTC report, saying "we still have a lot to do."

"For the past year, we have educated hundreds of app developers around the country on best practices for privacy and developed new transparency icons," said ACT?executive director Morgan Reed in an emailed statement.?"The message from the FTC today is that they appreciate our work, but we still have a lot to do."

Morgan did say that the FTC "missed" a few key?areas of progress, however.?

"Apple and the other platforms are moving developers away from using device-specific identifiers that can be unified across apps and services, and are introducing alternatives to limit tracking that are app-specific for sharing with advertisers and other third parties," he said. "This will make it very difficult to combine information based on these ID's across multiple apps or the Web."

He also pointed out that now, platforms are providing "very granular tools" in order to prevent apps from accessing geolocation and other certain data, regardless of the app itself.

The FTC says it would like to hear from parents who have complaints on this or any other issue concerning "fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices," so feel free to reach out with your own concerns, either on?the?FTC's online?Complaint Assistant?or by calling 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357).

Mali prime minister resigns after arrest by soldiers

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Malian Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra resigned on Tuesday, hours after he was arrested by soldiers while trying to leave the West African nation.

Diarra's arrest and subsequent resignation will complicate efforts to stabilise Mali, where soldiers and politicians remain divided since a coup in March and where the north of the country is occupied by al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters.

"I, Cheick Modibo Diarra, hereby resign with my entire government on Tuesday, December 11, 2012," a nervous-looking Diarra said in a statement broadcast on state television early on Tuesday morning.

News of Diarra's resignation came hours after he was arrested as he tried to leave the country for France.

Bakary Mariko, a spokesman for the group of soldiers that seized power in a March coup and remains powerful despite officially handing power back to civilians in April, said Diarra had been arrested for not working fully to address the nation's problems.

"The country is in crisis but he was blocking the institutions," Mariko said. "This is not a coup. The president is still in place but the prime minister was no longer working in the interests of the country."

Mariko said Diarra had been taken to the ex-junta's headquarters in Kati, a military barracks town just outside Bamako, after his arrest.

Coup leader Captain Amadou Sanogo has been repeatedly accused of meddling in politics since he stepped down and was officially tasked with overseeing reforms of Mali's army.

Residents in Bamako said the town was quiet in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

There have been divisions for months between the former junta, interim President Diouncounda Traore and Diarra, a former NASA scientist and Microsoft chief for Africa.

Diarra was made prime minister in April after the military officially handed power back to civilians. As the son-in-law of Moussa Traore, a former Malian coup leader and president, he appeared to have good ties with the military.

However, tensions became particularly acute in recent weeks, with analysts saying Diarra, a relative newcomer to Malian politics after years abroad, seemed keen to establish a political base of his own ahead of any future elections.

West African leaders and Western nations have warned that Mali's north has become a safe haven for terrorism and organised crime, but they have struggled to draw up plans to help the country because of the deep divisions in the capital.

Some of Mali's politicians support the idea of a foreign-backed military operation to retake control of the north. Others, including much of the military, say they need only financial and logistical support and insist that Mali can carry out the operation itself.

Obama says could lower top tax rates next year: Bloomberg

NEW DELHI, Dec 4 (TrustLaw) - Inside the crumbling housing estates of Shivaji Enclave, amid the boys playing cricket and housewives chatting from their balconies, winding staircases lead to places where lies a darker side to India's economic boom. Three months ago, police rescued Theresa Kerketa from one of these tiny two-roomed flats. For four years, she was kept here by a placement agency for domestic maids, in between stints as a virtual slave to Delhi's middle-class homes. ...

Police seek young leukemia patient taken from Arizona hospital

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Police are looking for an 11-year-old leukemia patient spirited out of a Phoenix hospital by her mother and are concerned a chest catheter in the girl's heart could lead to a fatal infection, authorities said on Tuesday.

Emily Bracamontes went missing from Phoenix Children's Hospital on November 28, said Phoenix police spokesman Sergeant Steve Martos.

The girl, who has leukemia, had previously been brought into the hospital by her mother for treatment, Martos said. During the treatment, a chest catheter was inserted into her heart.

Martos said that "for unknown reasons," the girl's mother, Norma Bracamontes, 35, removed the IV feed from her daughter's catheter, changed the child's clothing and sneaked her out of the hospital.

"We have been informed by medical personnel if the catheter is not medically removed, the victim's heart could potentially become infected resulting in the child's death," Martos said.

Emily previously had her right arm amputated due to infection, police said.

"(We) have worked tirelessly in an attempt to locate Emily and her family to ensure she receives the proper medical treatment she requires," Martos said.

He said it was too early to determine if Emily's mother would face criminal charges.

On Saturday, the U.S. Border Patrol stopped and questioned the girl's father, Luis Bracamontes, 46, as he was entering into Arizona from Mexico.

Police said he denied involvement in the incident or knowledge of his daughter's removal from the hospital and had no information on the whereabouts of Emily or her mother.

Luis Bracamontes was not in the Ford mini-van last seen leaving the hospital when Emily was removed from the facility, police said.

In an effort to find Emily, police have released surveillance video of the girl and her mother walking through the hospital as they were leaving.

Jane Walton, a spokeswoman for Phoenix Children's Hospital, declined to comment on the case, citing patient privacy rules.

If NFL executives really adore parity, they must be wincing at the early division clinchings by the Broncos, Patriots and Falcons.

Not to mention the Texans securing at least a wild-card berth, with nearly all of December still remaining.

Sure, there could still be some close races, particularly in the NFC North and for the wild cards. But after Sunday's action, four teams already can make plans to play in January.

The Broncos (9-3) won their seventh straight, 31-23 over Tampa Bay, to take the AFC West.

"It's one step," veteran cornerback Champ Bailey said. "It's not like we've done everything we want to do."

New England (9-3) won its fourth AFC East crown in a row and the 10th for Tom Brady, a record for a quarterback, when it downed Miami, 23-16.

"It means something," star receiver Wes Welker said after the Patriots' sixth win in a row. "I guess you get kind of spoiled at times. It's kind of just another hat and T-shirt, but they are not easy to come by. You just go out there and try to play well and do the things we do. I think you do get spoiled a little bit with the things we do, but I'll take them as they come."

Atlanta (11-1) defeated New Orleans 23-13 on Thursday night, and when the Buccaneers fell at Denver, the Falcons owned the NFC South.

"We don't worry about it," quarterback Matt Ryan said. "We try not to think that far ahead. One of the things I've learned in my five years is that if you're worrying about what you're going to do in January in September, October, November and December, you're wasting your time."

Houston (11-1) didn't waste any time in its trip to Nashville, winning 24-10 to grab a wild-card slot. The Texans haven't secured the AFC South yet because they still have two games remaining with runner-up Indianapolis (8-4), which shocked Detroit 35-33 on the final play of their game.

"We're very happy, I can tell you that," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said of the franchise's second playoff berth. "But I think they expected to get there, and they got there today. There's a lot more to work on. We've got to continue to push our group."

Elsewhere, it was Kansas City beating Carolina 27-21 one day after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend and then took his own life.

"It's been an incredibly difficult 24 hours for our family and our entire organization," Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said. "We have so many guys on our team and our coaching staff who are really, really hurting."

Also Sunday, it was Seattle 23, Chicago 17 in overtime; St. Louis 16, San Francisco 23 in OT; Pittsburgh 23, Baltimore 20; Green Bay 23, Minnesota 14; Cincinnati 20, San Diego 13; Dallas 38, Philadelphia 33; Buffalo 34, Jacksonville 18; the New York Jets 7, Arizona 6; and Cleveland 20, Oakland 17.

The New York Giants (7-4) are at Washington (5-6) in a key NFC East game Monday night.

___

BRONCOS 31, BUCCANEERS 23

At Denver, Peyton Manning threw three touchdowns, including one to defensive tackle Mitch Unrein.

Manning threw for 242 yards. He now has 29 touchdown passes on the season, moving past Jake Plummer and John Elway for the most by a Denver quarterback in a single year.

Manning threw two of the scores to Demaryius Thomas, who finished with eight catches for 99 yards, and Broncos linebacker Von Miller returned an interception for his first NFL score.

Rookie running back Doug Martin managed only 56 yards on 18 carries for Tampa Bay (6-6).

PATRIOTS 23, DOLPHINS 16

At Miami, Brady was sacked four times and threw an interception, just his fourth all season. But a botched punt, roughing-the-punter penalty and fumble by Miami led to 17 New England points, and another penalty negated a Dolphins touchdown on an interception.

The Patriots (9-3) are assured of their 12th consecutive winning season. Miami (5-7) lost to New England for the fifth straight time.

TEXANS 24, TITANS 10

At Nashville, the Texans set a franchise record for wins in a year and have won six in a row.

Rookie Whitney Mercilus recovered a fumble and had two sacks for a, well, merciless defense. After needing overtime in their past two wins, the Texans forced six turnovers and had six sacks of Jake Locker.

Matt Schaub threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns, and Arian Foster ran for a TD.

The Texans swept Tennessee (4-8), the team they replaced in Houston, for only the second time.

COLTS 35, LIONS 33

At Detroit, top overall pick Andrew Luck guided a sensational 11-play, 75-yard drive that took just 67 seconds. He threw a short pass that Donnie Avery took 14 yards into the end zone with no time left.

The Colts (8-4) stayed in control of the AFC wild-card race one season after going 2-12. Detroit (4-8) lost for the fourth straight time, including three in a row at home after leading in the final quarter.

CHIEFS 27, PANTHERS 21

At Kansas City, Mo., the Chiefs gave themselves a reason to be proud a day after the Belcher tragedy.

Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times at a residence near Arrowhead Stadium, then drove to the team's practice facility and turned the gun on himself as general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel looked on.

On Sunday, Brady Quinn threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns, and Jamaal Charles ran for 127 yards as Kansas City snapped an eight-game losing streak during one of the most difficult seasons the franchise has ever experienced.

"I'm just trying to get through the rest of today," said Quinn, who threw his first two touchdown passes in three years. "The emotions of what has taken place will probably hit home for a few guys the next few days, when they realize what's taken place."

SEAHAWKS 23, BEARS 17, OT

At Chicago, the Seahawks (7-5) got only their second road win in seven games ? they are perfect at home ? when rookie Russell Wilson connected with Sidney Rice on a 13-yard touchdown with 7:33 left in overtime. That finished off a 12-play, 80-yard march with the OT kickoff.

Seattle took a 17-14 edge lead with 24 seconds to go in regulation on Golden Tate's slaloming 14-yard run after taking a short pass from Wilson. But the Brandon Marshall beat double coverage to haul in a 56-yard pass the set up Robbie Gould's 46-yard field goal as time expired to send it into OT.

The Bears (8-4) fell into a tie atop the NFC North with Green Bay.

RAMS 16, 49ERS 13, OT

At St. Louis, the Rams (5-6-1) and 49ers (8-3-1) nearly played their second tie of the season. But rookie Greg Zuerlein kicked a 54-yard field goal with 26 seconds left in overtime after booting a 53-yarder to tie it as time expired in regulation.

The Rams scored twice in the final 3:04 of regulation, getting their lone touchdown when rookie Janoris Jenkins rolled 2 yards into the end zone with an errant pitchout by Colin Kaepernick.

San Francisco had a chance to win in OT, but David Akers was barely wide right on a 51-yard field goal.

STEELERS 23, RAVENS 20

At Baltimore, Shaun Suisham kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired for the undermanned Steelers (7-5).

Playing without injured quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for a third straight week, the Steelers got a solid effort from third-stringer Charlie Batch: 25 for 36 for 276 yards and a touchdown. He moved the Steelers 61 yards before Suisham's winning kick.

The Ravens (9-3) could have clinched a playoff berth with a victory. Instead, Baltimore had its 15-game home winning streak snapped and also lost for the first time in 13 games against division opponents.

PACKERS 23, VIKINGS 14

At Green Bay, Wis., James Starks had Green Bay's first TD on the ground in almost two months, Morgan Burnett picked off Christian Ponder's throws twice and the Packers (8-4) moved into that tie atop the NFC North with the Bears. Green Bay has won 10 in a row in the division.

Adrian Peterson had an 82-yard TD run and finished with 210 yards for Minnesota (6-6), the most he's had since suffering major knee injuries last December.

Ponder's picks were thrown in the end zone and around the Green Bay 10.

BENGALS 20, CHARGERS 13

At San Diego, Andy Dalton's run up the middle for a 6-yard touchdown with 4:11 left gave Cincinnati (7-5) its fourth straight victory.

Jermaine Gresham caught a 19-yard TD pass from Dalton and BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 118 yards on 25 carries.

The Chargers (4-8) lost their fourth straight game and for the seventh time in eight games.

COWBOYS 38, EAGLES 33

At Arlington, Texas, Tony Romo threw three touchdown passes to break Troy Aikman's career franchise record. Romo now has 168.

The Cowboys (6-6) trailed 27-24 when Romo led an 86-yard drive sparked by a 35-yard pass to Dez Bryant on third down. Bryant gave Dallas the lead when took a screen pass from the 6 and got inside the pylon with 5:40 remaining.

The Eagles (3-9) lost their eighth straight game despite 169 yards rushing and two touchdowns from rookie Bryce Brown a week after he set an Eagles rookie record with 178 yards.

But Brown also has fumble issues and Dallas went ahead by 11 when Morris Claiborne returned Brown's fumble 50 yards for a touchdown.

Damaris Johnson returned a punt 98 yards for Philly with 31 seconds left.

BILLS 34, JAGUARS 18

At Orchard Park, N.Y., Ryan Fitzpatrick led five straight scoring drives. Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes and scored on a 1-yard plunge in providing a spark to an injury-depleted offense that finished the game minus its top two receivers.

Fred Jackson had 101 yards rushing and C.J. Spiller scored on a 44-yard run that put Buffalo (5-7) up 34-10 early in the fourth quarter.

The Jaguars fell to 2-10.

JETS 7, CARDINALS 6

At East Rutherford, N.J., third-string QB Greg McElroy stepped in for a struggling Mark Sanchez and led New York (5-7) to its only score.

With Tim Tebow inactive as he heals from two broken ribs, coach Rex Ryan pulled Sanchez for McElroy ? as the crowd at MetLife Stadium cheered wildly ? late in the third quarter. McElroy led the Jets on an impressive drive, connecting with Jeff Cumberland on a 1-yard touchdown.

The sagging Cardinals (4-8) have their own troubles at quarterback. Ryan Lindley was ineffective in his second NFL start as Arizona lost its eighth straight game after a 4-0 start.

BROWNS 20, RAIDERS 17

At Oakland, Brandon Weeden threw for a career-high 364 yards and a touchdown as Cleveland (4-8) snapped a 12-game road losing streak.

Weeden hit fellow rookie Josh Gordon on a 44-yard score in the second quarter and Trent Richardson scored on a 3-yard run after Sheldon Brown made an interception deep in Cleveland territory when the Raiders (3-9) were driving.

The Browns (4-8) got their first road win since beating Indianapolis 27-19 on Sept. 18, 2011.

Scientists find 'bully' genes in common childhood tumor

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2012) ? In a genome sequencing study of 74 neuroblastoma tumors in children, scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) found that patients with changes in two genes, ARID1A and ARID1B, survive only a quarter as long as patients without the changes. The discovery could eventually lead to early identification of patients with aggressive neuroblastomas who may need additional treatments.

Neuroblastomas affect nerve tissue throughout the body and are the most common, non-blood cancer in children. "These cancers have a wide spectrum of clinical outcomes, with some that are highly curable and others very lethal," says Victor Velculescu, M.D., Ph.D., professor of oncology and co-director of the Cancer Biology Program at Johns Hopkins. "Part of the reason for this variety in prognosis may be due to changes in the ARID1A and ARID1B genes."

Velculescu said these powerful "bully" genes were not identified in other gene sequencing studies of neuroblastoma, most likely because the Johns Hopkins-CHOP researchers used sequencing and analytical methods that looked for larger, structural rearrangements of DNA in addition to changes in the sequence of individual chemical base-pairs that form DNA. A report of their work appears in the Dec. 2 issue of Nature Genetics.

Of the 74 tumors in the study, 71 were analyzed for both rearrangements and base-pair changes. Cancer-specific mutations were found in a variety of genes previously linked to neuroblastoma, including the ALK and MYCN genes. In eight of the 71 patients, the investigators found alterations in the ARID1A and ARID1B genes, which normally control the way DNA folds to allow or block protein production.

The children with ARID1A or ARID1B gene changes had far worse survival, on average, than those without the genetic alterations -- 386 days compared with 1,689 days. All but one of these patients died of progressive disease, including one child whose neuroblastoma was thought to be highly curable.

The scientists were also able to detect and monitor neuroblastoma-specific genetic changes in the blood of four patients included in the study, and correlated these findings to disease progression.

"Finding cancer-specific alterations in the blood could help clinicians monitor patients for relapse and determine whether residual cancer cells remain in the body after surgery," says Mark Sausen, a Johns Hopkins graduate student and one of the lead scientists involved in the research.

The Johns Hopkins-CHOP team plans to conduct further studies in larger groups of patients to confirm the ARID1A-ARID1B correlation to prognosis.

Funding for the study was provided by the St. Baldrick's Foundation, the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Fund for Cancer Research, Swim Across America, the American Association for Cancer Research -- Stand Up To Cancer's Dream Team Translational Cancer Research Grant, and the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute (CA121113).

Crystal Sugar workers reject contract 4th time

(AP) ? Their ranks thinned by a 16-month lockout, American Crystal Sugar Co. workers on Saturday rejected a contract for the fourth time.

Contract opponents say the sugar beet processor's five-year contract offer would cut health care benefits and weaken job security and seniority protections. The company says the offer would raise worker pay by 17 percent over five years when a $2,000 signing bonus is taken into account.

Leaders of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International union said in a news release that the workers voted 55 percent to reject management's contract offer.

"By now it should be clear that (company CEO) Dave Berg and Crystal Sugar's management team has no interest in ending a fiscally irresponsible lockout that has been disastrous to farm shareholders, put the federal sugar program in jeopardy, and hurt countless families in the Red River Valley," said John Riskey, the head of a union local that represents employees at three American Crystal factories.

"It's time for shareholders to reclaim their company and send management back to the table for real give-and-take negotiations," he said in the release.

He told The Associated Press later on the phone Saturday that union leaders will be following up with workers on how to deal with the contract issues from this point. He said no plans have been made for another meeting.

Company officials said in a statement Saturday after learning about the workers' vote that the package is "solid and generous" and "similar to what we are offering our current employees."

"We're finding the pay and benefits included in it are attracting high quality area workers who are now creating a productive and successful new workforce for our Company," the statement said. "The Company continues to move forward and focus on running our business, processing beets and delivering sugar to our customers."

The lockout began in Aug. 1, 2011, and affected about 1,300 workers at plants in Drayton and Hillsboro, N.D., and Minnesota factories in Moorhead, Crookston and East Grand Forks. More than 500 of those workers have since left, said Brian Ingulsrud, an American Crystal vice president.

The company has used replacement workers to continue operating the plants.

Moorhead, Minn.-based American Crystal is a cooperative owned by about 2,800 sugar beet growers. It is the nation's largest sugar beet processor, selling 90 percent of its production to industrial customers, including candy makers, bakeries and breakfast cereal makers.

The lockout began after 96 percent of the workers voting on the company's contract proposal rejected the offer on July 31, 2011. In subsequent ballots, 90 percent of the voting workers turned down the proposal in November 2011, and 63 percent rejected it in June.

In October, the AFL-CIO called for a boycott of Crystal's products. Some of the company's sugar is sold in grocery stores under Crystal's own label. It is sold as "Market Pantry" sugar in Target Corp. stores in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin.
