You probably know your blood type: A, B, AB or O. You may even know if you're Rhesus positive or negative. But how about the Langereis blood type? Or the Junior blood type? Positive or negative? Most people have never even heard of these.
Yet this knowledge could be "a matter of life and death," says University of Vermont biologist Bryan Ballif.
While blood transfusion problems due to Langereis and Junior blood types are rare worldwide, several ethnic populations are at risk, Ballif notes. "More than 50,000 Japanese are thought to be Junior negative and may encounter blood transfusion problems or mother-fetus incompatibility," he writes.
But the molecular basis of these two blood types has remained a mystery ? until now.
In the February issue of Nature Genetics, Ballif and his colleagues report on their discovery of two proteins on red blood cells responsible for these lesser-known blood types.
Ballif identified the two molecules as specialized transport proteins named ABCB6 and ABCG2.
"Only 30 proteins have previously been identified as responsible for a basic blood type," Ballif notes, "but the count now reaches 32."
The last new blood group proteins to be discovered were nearly a decade ago, Ballif says, "so it's pretty remarkable to have two identified this year."
Both of the newly identified proteins are also associated with anticancer drug resistance, so the findings may also have implications for improved treatment of breast and other cancers.
As part of the international effort, Ballif, assistant professor in UVM's biology department, used a mass spectrometer funded by the Vermont Genetics Network. With this machine, he analyzed proteins purified by his longtime collaborator, Lionel Arnaud at the French National Institute for Blood Transfusion in Paris, France.
Ballif and Arnaud, in turn, relied on antibodies to Langereis and Junior blood antigens developed by Yoshihiko Tani at the Japanese Red Cross Osaka Blood Center and Toru Miyasaki at the Japanese Red Cross Hokkaido Blood Center.
After the protein identification in Vermont, the work returned to France. There Arnaud and his team conducted cellular and genetic tests confirming that these proteins were responsible for the Langereis and Junior blood types. "He was able to test the gene sequence," Ballif says, "and, sure enough, we found mutations in this particular gene for all the people in our sample who have these problems."
Beyond the ABO blood type and the Rhesus (Rh) blood type, the International Blood Transfusion Society recognizes twenty-eight additional blood types with names like Duffy, Kidd, Diego and Lutheran. But Langereis and Junior have not been on this list. Although the antigens for the Junior and Langereis (or Lan) blood types were identified decades ago in pregnant women having difficulties carrying babies with incompatible blood types, the genetic basis of these antigens has been unknown until now.
Therefore, "very few people learn if they are Langereis or Junior positive or negative," Ballif says.
"Transfusion support of individuals with an anti-Lan antibody is highly challenging," the research team wrote in Nature Genetics, "partly because of the scarcity of compatible blood donors but mainly because of the lack of reliable reagents for blood screening." And Junior-negative blood donors are extremely rare too. That may soon change.
With the findings from this new research, health care professionals will now be able to more rapidly and confidently screen for these novel blood group proteins, Ballif wrote in a recent news article. "This will leave them better prepared to have blood ready when blood transfusions or other tissue donations are required," he notes.
"Now that we know these proteins, it will become a routine test," he says.
This science may be especially important to organ transplant patients. "As we get better and better at transplants, we do everything we can to make a good match," Ballif says. But sometimes a tissue or organ transplant, that looked like a good match, doesn't work ? and the donated tissue is rejected, which can lead to many problems or death.
"We don't always know why there is rejection," Ballif says, "but it may have to do with these proteins."
The rejection of donated tissue or blood is caused by the way the immune system distinguishes self from not-self. "If our own blood cells don't have these proteins, they're not familiar to our immune system," Ballif says, so the new blood doesn't "look like self" to the complex cellular defenses of the immune system. "They'll develop antibodies against it," Ballif says, and try to kill off the perceived invaders. In short, the body starts to attack itself.
"Then you may be out of luck," says Ballif, who notes that in addition to certain Japanese populations, European Gypsies are also at higher risk for not carrying the Langereis and Junior blood type proteins.
"There are people in the United States who have these challenges too," he says, "but it's more rare."
Ballif and his international colleagues are not done with their search. "We're following up on more unknown blood types," he says. "There are probably on the order of 10 to 15 more of these unknown blood type systems ? where we know there is a problem but we don't know what the protein is that is causing the problem."
Although these other blood systems are very rare, "if you're that one individual, and you need a transfusion," Ballif says, "there's nothing more important for you to know."

When did you first read North and South?
Not that long ago, only about six months before I began writing the book.
If Mr. Thornton disappeared off the literary page (horror of horrors), what book character would replace him as the one to be fangirled over? Mr. Darcy? Someone else?
I think Mr Thornton already comes second to Darcy in most peoples eyes but for me, if not Thornton it would be a tie between Rochester and Darcy.
Are your books available in a print format as well as ebooks?
They are, from Amazon and all good online retailers. Northern Light?s ISBN is 978-1463575434, and What You Wish For?s ISBN is 978-1466457188.

It?s a sequel to the book, so you won?t find events that happened in the mini-series referred to. However I realised that many readers wouldn?t have read the book so I did my best to marry the two endings up.
Thankfully the mini-series was fairly faithful to the book but there are a few areas where characterization differed. Thornton for example doesn?t appear to have any kind of temper in the book (and didn?t attack one of his workers, justified or otherwise) while in the book Margaret didn?t dislike him in the beginning, he was just completely outside her field of experience and she was largely indifferent to him. Any offense she gave was mostly unintentional, while in the mini-series she definitely disliked his character and at times wanted to verbally attack him.
There are other small details in the mini-series that don?t directly contradict the book but wouldn?t fit in with the sequel unless I went along with them. Watson being a mill owner for example. In the book his profession is never stated and his part is tiny, he?s mentioned only in passing as Fanny?s intended and for the speculation having been his idea. At the same time it?s never stated that he is not a mill owner, therefore I left that as his profession.
What would be the first thing you?d do if you were transported to the world of North and South like your main character in What You Wish For?
Check that I was rich! I do love period drama and completely understand the romanticism of a simpler time but the reality is that life pretty much sucked for everyone who didn?t have money! Thanks to poor food, dangerous working conditions and poor sanitation leading to illness, life expectancy for the working classes was low. In 1850?s average life expectancy for the working classes in Whitechapel, London was 22, while for the upper classes it was 45 years.
What modern amenities would you miss most?
Oh, this is so hard. High on the list would be the internet; almost all knowledge is just a few mouse clicks away and I would hate to go back to such an ignorant time without that resource.
Next would be mobile phones. I didn?t get my first mobile until I was 20 so I remember how many problems the inability to stay in touch caused. Even just visiting a shopping centre, people had to designate a ?meet up? point in case they lost each other. A friends parents once invited me and my sister swimming when I was about 5. We arrived home to find the police there because our Mum thought we?d been abducted!
Finally, the ability to record and play music. I love all types music and that would be the pastime I missed most.
What book, other than your own, would you recommend to readers who loved North and South?
Well obviously if you haven?t read Pride and Prejudice or Jane Eyre I would recommend those for their dreamy heroes and feisty heroines. I enjoyed most Jane Austen books as well, not just P&P.
Other than that, Georgette Heyer and Charlotte Bingham seem popular among North and South fans.
Georgette Heyer is definitely a good fit for N&S fans.? Do you have any more books in progress?
Three actually. The third vampire book is in the editing stage. A standalone historical novel about a romance between an Earl?s son and a housemaid is nearly finished. I?m also trying a new series about a Muse (as in Greek mythology) and her human charge, but that one has been on the back burner for a while now.

Contagion fears back on Greek bailout uncertainty
LONDON (AP) ? Mounting confusion over whether Greece will get vital bailout cash to avoid defaulting next month is rekindling fears that Europe's debt crisis will spread to bigger countries like Italy.
As stocks and the euro fell sharply on Thursday, borrowing rates rose for Italy and Spain, an indication of renewed investor concerns that they will eventually be dragged back into the crisis that had shown some signs of easing over the past couple of months.
The pressure on the two countries had eased substantially in recent weeks, primarily because the European Central Bank offered super-cheap long-term loans to banks.
But new jitters were creeping into markets as worries grew about a default in Greece next month. The country has yet to clinch deals for a bailout worth ?130 billion ($170 billion) and an accompanying ?100 billion ($131 billion) debt writedown by private bondholders.
Jean-Claude Juncker, who heads eurozone finance meetings, promised more clarity on Monday, when he said decisions will be made.
Over the past few days, doubts grew that the bailout deal may be unravelling and on Wednesday relations between Greece and its partners in the eurozone hit a new low.
Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizolos said there were some in the eurozone who wanted Greece out of the euro while his counterpart in Germany Wolfgang Schaeuble even urged the postponement of elections in Greece, which are due in April.
"Yesterday's back and forth between Greek politicians and EU policymakers had all the hallmarks of an unedifying playground spat, with accusations and insults flying thick and fast," said Michael Hewson, markets analyst at CMC Markets.
"Unfortunately there will be no winners or losers in this particular little saga as Europe gives the impression of gearing up to cut Greece loose, unless they subjugate to demands for new measures to sate various new concerns."
As uncertainty lingers, investors are gradually reassessing their assumption that Greece will get the money, prompting big market movements Thursday. The Stoxx 50 index of leading European shares was down 0.5 percent while the euro slipped by the same rate to below $1.30.
Meanwhile, the yield on Italy's ten-year bond has risen by 0.20 percentage points to 5.84 percent while Spain's rate has risen another 0.16 percentage points to 5.55 percent. Though both are still down from the 7 percent mark that is considered unsustainable in the long-run, the increases are the biggest daily movements in weeks.
Greece was asked last week to meet three demands so it could get the bailout cash which it needs to avoid defaulting on its debts on March 20, when a big bond redemption is due. As well as insisting that Parliament agrees another batch of austerity measures, the eurozone wanted clarity on a further ?325 million ($425 million) in savings by Greece and the written agreement by the leaders of the Greek coalition government to the measures after the elections.
Even though all three conditions appear to have cleared, the eurozone is balking at finalizing the bailout, with some suggestions that money should not be handed over until after the elections.
On Wednesday evening, after a three-and-a-half-hour conference call between the 17 eurozone finance ministers, it looked like more hurdles have been put in front of Greece.
Though Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the eurozone group of finance ministers, said Greece had made "substantial further progress," he added that "further considerations are necessary regarding the specific mechanisms to strengthen the surveillance of programme implementation and to ensure that priority is given to debt servicing."
His statement suggests that Greece's eurozone creditors may be insisting on a recent proposal by France and Germany to set up an account, separate from Greece's general budget, that would be dedicated to paying off Greece's massive debt. It was unclear whether this account would only manage the bailout money or whether government revenue could also be funneled into it.
Such an account would give the eurozone more control over what Greece does with its money, after the country has repeatedly missed budget, reform and privatization targets over the past two years. However, it could also be seen as an unprecedented interference into the fiscal affairs of a sovereign state.
The European Commission, which is in charge of economic surveillance in the European Union, is now working on a specific proposal for such an escrow account, which will be present to the ministers at a meeting on Monday.
In Athens, Venizelos said a combination of the country's written pledges, Parliament's passage of the austerity measures with a two-thirds majority and labor reform legislation were "a credible response to all those in Europe who doubt our ability to implement the program and to continue its implementation after the coming elections."

Bangladesh's government declared the areas to be wildlife sanctuaries Jan. 29, establishing them in part to protect freshwater dolphins in the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove ecosystem.
The sanctuaries will serve the last two species of freshwater dolphins in Asia: the Ganges River dolphin and the Irrawaddy dolphin.
Although there is no global population estimate for either species, both have disappeared from major portions of their range. Yet both species occur in sufficient numbers in the Sundarbans, which may serve as a global safety net for preventing their extinction. Freshwater dolphins are among the most threatened wildlife on Earth because their habitat is highly degraded by human activities, including dam construction and unsustainable fisheries.
The three sanctuaries safeguard 19 miles (31 kilometers) of channels that were found by a 2010 Wildlife Conservation Society study to be important habitat for the dolphins and were threatened by human activity.

Home Value Declines Pick Up in Fourth Quarter | Real Estate Insider ...
Rising foreclosures and soft economic data were the main culprits behind accelerated declines in home values during the fourth quarter. According to the Q4 Zillow Real Estate Market Reports, released today, national home values fell 1.1 percent from the third to the fourth quarter, representing an annual decline of 4.7 percent. Overall, national home values have fallen 24.2 percent since their peak in May 2007. The newly released Zillow Home Value Forecast, however, points to brighter days in the future for many markets.
According to the Zillow Home Value Forecast, national home values will decline less in 2012 than in 2011, ending the year down 3.7 percent. While the Forecast does not show a bottom in home values nationally this year, home values in some individual markets are likely to reach a bottom. In the Washington and Los Angeles metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), the Forecast shows home values increasing by 1.3 and 1.2 percent, respectively, by the end of the year.
Additionally, markets like Riverside, Calif., Phoenix and Baltimore MSAs will likely reach a bottom in home values in 2012.

Harold McGraw was an active supporter of Darien Library with a personal commitment to education and a belief in the important role a child?s library experiences play in the beginning of life-long literacy. The McGraw family has funded the formation of a Children?s Librarian Fellowship at Darien Library to honor his memory, through a two-year full-salaried position for a recent Master in Library Science graduate who:
demonstrates exemplary scholarship
possesses a passion for working with children and for the development of literacy
shows significant leadership promise
has strong personal qualities
demonstrates a penchant for technology
Selection Process
The Fellowship will be open to LIS graduates from an accredited Library School in the United States or Canada who will have received his or her diploma between December 1, 2011 and July 1, 2012.
Applications will be due March 30, 2012. After initial screening, interviews for finalists will be held at a mutually convenient time and place, and the finalist will be invited to visit Darien Library for a meeting with the Fellowship Committee prior to appointment.
Term
The successful applicant will be employed at Darien Library for two years, commencing approximately July 1, 2012, with a final employment date of June 30, 2014.
Compensation
The Fellow will be paid initially at the Connecticut Library Association MLS minimum salary for entry-level positions (for 2012: $50,700) with full benefits, paid membership in CLA and ALA, and funding for attendance at the American Library Association Annual Meeting and other meetings as appropriate.
Position Parameters
The Fellow will work as a member of the Children?s Services team, providing reference and reader?s advisory services in addition to creating and conducting programs for children and families. The Fellow will be given specific, defined, high-stakes projects and responsibilities that will be determined by the successful candidate?s skills and interests. The Fellowship will provide experience, growth, and challenges in the following areas:
? Children?s materials collection development
? Program development, implementation, and evaluation
? Outreach to defined areas of the community
? Continuing education, professional development, and support
